The Wooden Floor Decision Making Process

Firstly decide on the timber and grading of your choice.

Parquet or plank?

Floorboard width or mixture of widths?

Texture - add surface texture or enhance the grain structure with a Brushed or Band-Sawn finish.

Choose from our range of trending wooden floor stains: Natural, Saatchi White, Sandbanks Cream, Smokey Grey, Antiqued...

Seamless floor? Specify Square-Shoulder floorboards - please bear in mind that your installed floor cannot be factory finished as will require sanding on site . As sub-floors are rarely 100% flat ...a square-shoulder finish will follow the contours of the floor below.

A Micro-Bevel will add subtle definition to the floorboards and eliminates the need for on-site sanding.

To emulate a time-shrunk traditional floorboard look / Ship's Deck Style specify our Gappy finish.

Protection. Unfinished, Lacquered ,UV Oiled... Low-Lustre or Matt ?

White Wide and Very Long Floorboards

engineered pine flooring

Engineered Douglas Fir flooring with our Saatchi stain (white lye & soap effect) is amongst our most popular floors and finishes. Our clients typically specify our widest engineered Douglas Fir Floorboard (260mm) and in the longest length specification (up to 3.5m). Douglas Fir is a beautiful softwood - the only engineered Pine flooring that we produce and looks stunning with a Scandinavian style white stain.

White Lye and Soap  is a technique popular in Scandinavia that lightens wood for a sophisticated, paler look. The wood is bleached with lye and finished with a soap treatment. Douglas Fir Flooring  lends itself beautifully to a white finish. An iconic example is the Saatchi Gallery in London where the solid Douglas Fir flooring has been finished with white lye and soap.

A White Lye and Soap finished Douglas Fir floor however, requires extremely regular maintenance to preserve its contemporary chic and needs regular Soaping to maintain both the bleached look and clean / protect against dirt and grease. In response to this we developed a permanent yet natural translucent white stain - Saatchi that provides the same bleached look of White Lye ... allowing the beautiful pinky grain of the timber to show through and we seal the stain and protect the Douglas Fir Flooring  with a UV matt / semi sheen oil to provide a durable low-maintenance alternative.

Scandinavian Style White Ash Flooring

 engineered american white ash flooring

If you love the contemporary luxe of Douglas Fir flooring  but require a more durable timber we recommend that you consider our Engineered American White Ash Saatchi flooring.  White Ash with our translucent Saatchi White Stain & Low-lustre  UV oil finish provides a similar Scandinavian style floor but with inherent hardness and minimal maintenance. Douglas Fir is a soft-wood and will therefore dent and mark very easily it is also susceptible to hairline cracks and splitting.

White Ash as well as being amongst the most durable hardwoods for flooring is a timber that receives a stain exceptionally well. Available subject to the availability of this wonderful North American hardwood in a choice of 3 single-strip, wide plank floorboard widths: 200mm, 240mm and 260mm. Standard lengths  - median 2.4m. A longer length specification is also available up to 3.5m -  again subject to the availability of this beautiful American hardwood.

Natural UV Oil Finish

natural wide plank oak t & g flooring

Our Natural finish proved to be very popular last year and shows no sign of waning in 2018. Natural and nude have emerged as key trends for wooden floors in 2018.

Creating a harmonious home with a natural soul provides escape from the hectic, technological world we find ourselves in.Beautiful wood floors with nude finishes and tactile surfaces both touch the senses and create the perfect backdrop to a naturally inspired interior. This look is all about wide plank, luxuriously long floorboards that resonate an organic warmth, individuality and understated drama which lesser floors and laminates won’t deliver... A clear oil will intensify the warmth of tones of a timber and over time and exposure to sunlight this golden patina will deepen. If you prefer organic hues and wish to retain the natural tones of light coloured timbers then this is the perfect finish for you. Our Natural UV  Oil finish contains a small amount of white pigment which neutralises the warming  / yellowing effect which is seen when a clear oil is applied on its own. This finish is unsuitable as a base coat on darker coloured timbers.

Shades Of Grey

grey oak engineered flooring

Grey has been popping up all over interior design trends, and wooden flooring now has its turn. Grey is the new neutral but it’s different and unexpected. A great base, more pronounced than our Nature Oil finish ....but not a show-stealer. Grey hues lend themselves beautifully to our  European Oak engineered flooring  (above), Appalachian Oak engineered flooring and American White Ash engineered flooring. All three of these lighter toned hardwoods react differently to a grey stain. One thing that resonates in common however is the right shade of grey. We have worked hard to develop a translucent tone that allows natural hues, character and figuring to shine through.

Texture & Stain

Bespoke Pine Engineered Flooring

This engineered Douglas Fir floor was probably our most unusual bespoke specification last year. Our client wanted a 'Nando's style engineered pine floor' with a dark navy stain that would wear quickly (this request was most unique as the objective in staining an engineered wooden floor is typically to retain this) coupled with a rough sawn texture. Douglas Fir is a softwood and dents / marks easily but this too was desirable and added to the aged / distressed look our clients were searching for. The results speak for themselves. Unique & classy with a touch of  Industrial chic.

Band-Sawn Ash Flooring

band sawn natural ash flooring

Natural White Ash flooring works wonderfully with a band sawn finish leaving a rippled texture on the surface of the floor-board. Texturised floorboards are gaining in popularity with interior designers, architects and forward thinking home-owners. Our Band Sawn Ash flooring looks gorgeous as nature intended with a  natural stain as pictured above to retain organical hues, and also in a contemporary white or warm grey stain. A stain applied over the band-sawn surface adds further tonal dimension and extra character to the floorboards.

Brushing

brushed american white ash engineered flooring

Brushing is another finish that we uses to create texture to our engineered wooden floors  but in a more subtle way than band sawing . Brushing is a technique that pulls the soft grain and enhances the beautiful grain structure and figuring. The American White Ash flooring above has been brushed to enhance the grain structure and Nature UV Oiled to prevent yellowing of  the timber.
